Artist's Description
Every year I get to paint the buffalo at the Zion Mountain Ranch in East Zion, Utah for a few days in September. It is ironic to me that last year I met someone in Utah who is on staff at the Wm. S. Hart Ranch in Newhall, CA, a 20-minute drive from my home. Needless to say, this past year I've had the opportunity to paint their buffalo. From conversations with those who manage the herd, these buffalo were transferred from Disney property back in the 1960's. There are 15 buffalo on the 260-acre ranch. One time I went to paint, got all set up. One buffalo stood up, then walked away with the rest trailing behind. I got great photos of the herd moving up into the hills that day. I painted this composition on the last Friday of 2011. The buffalo were hanging out at the top of the hill. I was just finishing up when one of the animals started moving downhill. By the time I was packed up, they had all left.
