Artist's Description

The desert is a quiet place to paint. These Joshua Trees seem 'groomed' to me; so many have dead stumps and debris in stretches of desert that sees little rain. But this was a campground. Passersby stop to chat on the way to their hike. Pleasant weather here in April, endless sky and lots of reflected light on trees and rock and stone. Still it required a sun shade, and by 1 pm it was time to stop, reference photos taken to help complete the work in studio. Red Rock Campground, Mohave.

About Jane Thorpe

Jane Thorpe

Jane was born and raised in Stratford, CT. Her father was a self-employed commercial artist who worked at home, which gave her access to both supplies and encouragement. She moved to California in 1973. Jane has been an artist all her life, working in different mediums and working at a variety of commercial art jobs. She earned a degree in Fine Art and says there is always more to learn. She started plein air painting in the 1980’s in watercolor. Since 2010, she has focused on plein air painting in oil. She finds that all the mediums she has worked in, all the jobs she’s held, all her life experience, all contribute to this latest passion.
