Description
This past July I painted the full moon in Kagel Canyon where I live. A few friends and neighbors joined me; what a great time we had! I decided I would paint every full moon (give or take a night) for a year. (Me and my big ideas!)
"Moonrise At Sunset" was painted on August 27th (2015) around 7 pm. The moonrise clears the Canyon Ridge about 40 minutes after the official time. It was a beautiful evening, cool after a hot day, and the ridge was lit up by the colorful sunset. It was such a treat to be doing this!
Such evenings are now but a memory with shorter days and cool, brisk evenings. (I didn't think about that when I vowed to do this!) Well, there's nothing for it but to do it. I suspect when Spring rolls around and the days lengthen, it will be more appreciated by me. It is something of an adventure, and a challenge to paint at night with headlamps! I am glad when other artists join me for a few hours each month. We park by the Fire Station (No. 74) at the entrance to Dexter Park, so it is easy to find us and it feels safe if no one else shows up.
I thought painting the same ridge every month might get boring, but actually it simplifies the compositional choices and allows me to concentrate on current conditions and seasonal subtleties.. I've been posting these nocturnes on Facebook since July, and have recently had high resolution images taken to post on my website. I'll be posting the better ones (and painting over the not-so-worthy efforts).
The opportunities for a plein air painter continue to surprise me. I wish I had started sooner, but better now than never. (God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change and the courage to change the things I can...) Amen!
