"Silent Night" was painted in August. I named it so because it was a warm, still, soft night. It was so pleasant outside at night after the heat of the day that I painted the full moon three nights in a row. After doing multiple ridge compositions with the moon at various heights, I wanted to paint something different. I looked around and noticed the hillside behind me opposite the fire station. As a composition the hillside had three things going for it: it's trees stood out against a sky full of stars; it was partially lit by the warm light from the fire station; and the rest of it was bathed in the clear cool moonlight. Jane was born and raised in Stratford, CT. Her father was a self-employed commercial artist who worked at home, which gave her access to both supplies and encouragement. She moved to California in 1973. Jane has been an artist all her life, working in different mediums and working at a variety of commercial art jobs. She earned a degree in Fine Art and says there is always more to learn. She started plein air painting in the 1980’s in watercolor. Since 2010, she has focused on plein air painting in oil. She finds that all the mediums she has worked in, all the jobs she’s held, all her life experience, all contribute to this latest passion.
