This is a plein air painting from Chuck Kovacic's March 2015 Round Up. This location is three miles east of Zion's East Entrance, and just down the road from Zion Mountain Ranch. I had planned on painting the buffalo on the ranch, but they were over the hill and out of sight. It had snowed the week before and much of the snow remained. (Last year this time, the grass was green and the buffalo were grazing, hence my plans). My plans derailed, I had noticed a flock of wild turkeys along the road and pulled over to take photos. The pullout was fortuitous; the landscape beyond was already composed; I painted it as is. The turkeys came and went. In a larger format I would paint the turkeys grazing (I have LOTS of reference photos!).
Jane was born and raised in Stratford, CT. Her father was a self-employed commercial artist who worked at home, which gave her access to both supplies and encouragement. She moved to California in 1973. Jane has been an artist all her life, working in different mediums and working at a variety of commercial art jobs. She earned a degree in Fine Art and says there is always more to learn. She started plein air painting in the 1980’s in watercolor. Since 2010, she has focused on plein air painting in oil. She finds that all the mediums she has worked in, all the jobs she’s held, all her life experience, all contribute to this latest passion.
