Artist's Description

I treated myself to a bunch of Sunflowers. Considering them for a still life, I chose a vase and a favorite Edward S. Curtis print of a Native American woman in profile titled, "Everywind." I call her 'Sunflower.' I tried this composition before, the print framed. It never looked right. This time I leaned the unframed print against the vase. Also, one of the stems was broken, so I put the sunflower head in a ceramic cup; its reflection provided a cool note, added depth, and a needed transition between the sunflowers above and the print. This composition feels right to me.

About Jane Thorpe

Jane Thorpe

Jane was born and raised in Stratford, CT. Her father was a self-employed commercial artist who worked at home, which gave her access to both supplies and encouragement. She moved to California in 1973. Jane has been an artist all her life, working in different mediums and working at a variety of commercial art jobs. She earned a degree in Fine Art and says there is always more to learn. She started plein air painting in the 1980’s in watercolor. Since 2010, she has focused on plein air painting in oil. She finds that all the mediums she has worked in, all the jobs she’s held, all her life experience, all contribute to this latest passion.
