This studio painting resulted from this year's March Round Up (organized by Chuck Kovacic). During our two day stay in Zion, I had taken the time to do the one mile River Walk up to The Narrows entry point. I had my travel watercolor pack with me, and did a couple of quick studies of other things along the path. Returning from our walk, I came around the bend and saw this sun struck scene. I took multiple photos, but mostly stood and stared and soaked it in; it was dazzling! At home I did a small watercolor sketch, followed by an 8x10 oil sketch in preparation for the studio painting. I can paint from photos only if I've painted in that area and if I've noted the actual value and color of the shadows. Zion, March 2015

Jane was born and raised in Stratford, CT. Her father was a self-employed commercial artist who worked at home, which gave her access to both supplies and encouragement. She moved to California in 1973. Jane has been an artist all her life, working in different mediums and working at a variety of commercial art jobs. She earned a degree in Fine Art and says there is always more to learn. She started plein air painting in the 1980’s in watercolor. Since 2010, she has focused on plein air painting in oil. She finds that all the mediums she has worked in, all the jobs she’s held, all her life experience, all contribute to this latest passion.
