The wonders of travel! I had preconceived ideas for paintings in Zion on this year's March Round-Up.*
Heading toward East Zion one morning, I was driving up and around a switchback and saw this group of deer grazing along the road. I stopped to enjoy the encounter and take photos. The morning light on the deer and the back lit ridge was wonderful, and fleeting. I did a water color sketch and later a small oil sketch of the proposed composition using color notes and photo references. The wildlife in Zion adds to my enjoyment of the Park, and this painting captures that brief encounter. It's good to have plans, but better to be open to the unexpected.

Jane was born and raised in Stratford, CT. Her father was a self-employed commercial artist who worked at home, which gave her access to both supplies and encouragement. She moved to California in 1973. Jane has been an artist all her life, working in different mediums and working at a variety of commercial art jobs. She earned a degree in Fine Art and says there is always more to learn. She started plein air painting in the 1980’s in watercolor. Since 2010, she has focused on plein air painting in oil. She finds that all the mediums she has worked in, all the jobs she’s held, all her life experience, all contribute to this latest passion.
