About Jane Thorpe
Jane was born and raised in Stratford, CT. Her father was a self-employed commercial artist who worked at home, which gave her access to both supplies and encouragement. She moved to California in 1973.
Jane has been an artist all her life, working in different mediums and working at a variety of commercial art jobs. She earned a degree in Fine Art and says there is always more to learn.
She started plein air painting in the 1980’s in watercolor. Since 2010, she has focused on plein air painting in oil. She finds that all the mediums she has worked in, all the jobs she’s held, all her life experience, all contribute to this latest passion.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
The challenge for me is to capture a snapshot in time with paint. There is such variety of light, texture, color, and mood in Nature. There is always something to catch my eye.
I also enjoy creating a story in still life using objects that I have collected and subjects that interest me.
Although painting is “work” because it requires focus, painting allows my mind to rest from life’s challenges. Reading Winston Churchill’s “Painting as a Pastime” reminds me of this benefit.
“Armed with a paint-box, one cannot be bored.” (Winston Churchill)
