This past July I painted the full moon in Kagel Canyon where I live. A few friends and neighbors joined me; what a great time we had! I decided I would paint every full moon (give or take a night) for a year. (Me and my big ideas!)
"Moonrise At Sunset" was painted on August 27th (2015) around 7 pm. The moonrise clears the Canyon Ridge about 40 minutes after the official time. It was a beautiful evening, cool after a hot day, and the ridge was lit up by the colorful sunset. It was such a treat to be doing this!
Such evenings are now but a memory with shorter days and cool, brisk evenings. (I didn't think about that when I vowed to do this!) Well, there's nothing for it but to do it. I suspect when Spring rolls around and the days lengthen, it will be more appreciated by me. It is something of an adventure, and a challenge to paint at night with headlamps! Jane was born and raised in Stratford, CT. Her father was a self-employed commercial artist who worked at home, which gave her access to both supplies and encouragement. She moved to California in 1973. Jane has been an artist all her life, working in different mediums and working at a variety of commercial art jobs. She earned a degree in Fine Art and says there is always more to learn. She started plein air painting in the 1980’s in watercolor. Since 2010, she has focused on plein air painting in oil. She finds that all the mediums she has worked in, all the jobs she’s held, all her life experience, all contribute to this latest passion.
